Cala Les Urques is a small natural cove on the southern coastline of Calpe, close to the Puerto Blanco area.

Its most important feature is that it is officially designated as a dog beach, making it the principal local option for visitors who want to enjoy the coast with their pets.

The cove is approximately 100 metres long and has a shoreline of pebbles, rocks and naturally occurring seagrass. It is very different from Calpe’s main sandy beaches and has only basic facilities.

A designated beach for dogs

Cala Les Urques is identified by Calpe’s official tourism website as a dog beach. Dogs can therefore accompany their owners onto the cove rather than being restricted in the same way as on Calpe’s principal bathing beaches.

Owners should remain considerate of other visitors and keep their dogs under control. Bring waste bags and remove all dog waste immediately, using the bins provided.

Before visiting, check whether the council has introduced any updated requirements concerning leads, identification, vaccinations or potentially dangerous breeds.

What is the beach like?

Cala Les Urques is a natural pebble cove rather than a developed resort beach. Its surface consists of rounded stones and rocky areas, so it is not especially comfortable for lying down without a thick mat.

Water shoes are recommended for visitors entering the sea. Owners should also consider whether the pebbles will be comfortable for their dog, particularly during hot weather.

The council describes the water as generally calm and containing seagrass. Conditions can still change according to the weather, so dogs should not be encouraged into the sea during rough or uncertain conditions.

Access to Cala Les Urques

The official access point is: Partida Maryvilla 9, Calpe

The final approach and pebble shoreline can be uneven, making supportive footwear advisable.

The access is unsuitable for wheelchairs, pushchairs and visitors who struggle with rough or sloping ground.

Parking

Calpe’s official beach listing does not identify a dedicated car park at Cala Les Urques.

Drivers should follow local signs, respect private entrances and avoid obstructing narrow roads in the Maryvilla area. During summer, allow extra time to find a legal space.

See our Calpe parking guide for broader information about parking rules and busy periods.

Facilities

Cala Les Urques has very limited facilities. Calpe Town Council lists:

  • Waste bins
  • Boat surveillance

Swimming with dogs

The generally calm water can suit dogs that are already confident swimmers. However, owners should not assume that every dog will be safe or comfortable in the sea.

Watch for:

  • Changing waves or currents
  • Slippery underwater rocks
  • Sharp or uneven surfaces
  • Other dogs using the water
  • Boats approaching the coastline
  • Signs that your dog is becoming tired

There is no ordinary beach lifeguard post listed, so owners remain responsible for their own safety and that of their animals.

Snorkelling and watersports

The rocky shoreline and clear water may make Cala Les Urques attractive for snorkelling when conditions are suitable.

However, equipment rental is not an official beach facility. Visitors wishing to snorkel should bring their own equipment and exercise additional care because there is no shore-based lifeguard listed.
