Civil Ceremonies
There are strict requirements to have a marriage registered and legalized in Spain, with current Spanish law not allowing non-residents to have a legally-binding wedding. In order to havea a legal wedding in spain, one of the partners must be either a Spanish national or have held Spanish residency for a minimum of two years.
Given these strict requirements, it is often recommended that the legal marriage is completed in your home country, and for a beautiful ceremony to be held at a wedding venue in Spain.
Religious Ceremonies
The civil marriage regulations do not need to be met if you decide to have a Catholic wedding in Spain. A Catholic church wedding is recognized as a legal wedding in Spain provided the couple are able to comply with the Catholic church requirements. Meeting the requirements enables couples to have a legal church wedding in Spain without the requirement of the 2 year residency.
The requirements for a Catholic wedding include:
* Pre-nuptial enquiry
*Certificates of Baptism, Communion and Confirmation - these are issued by your local Catholic church
*Confirmation of "free to marry" permission from your parish
*Special permission from your local Bishop to get married in a Spanish church
Please note that Jewish, Islamic and Protestant weddings are also considered legal marriages in Spain as long as they are performed by a licensed marriage officer.
Symbolic Weddings
Given the strict requirements to hold a civil ceremony, many couples decide to have a symbolic wedding ceremony for their destination wedding in Spain. Symbolic ceremonies can be completely customised to your requirements.
