The Jesús Nazareno Fiesta in Javea is a traditional fiesta held in honor of "Jesús Nazareno" on the third Sunday of lent.
There are details below of a prior Javea Jesús Nazareno fiesta as a guide, with the main attractions including 4 nights of "Bous Al Carrer" (bull running) in Placa del Convent, a giant paella, traditional flower crosses contest and flower offering, fireworks, disco party and "pujada" candlelight procession to the Ermita del Calvario.
Although St. Sebastian is the Patron Saint of Javea / Xàbia, the Festivities in honour of "Jesús Nazareno" have the strongest popular support and devotion among Xàbia's citizens.
These festivities honour Jesús Nazareno and his image, which was awarded the title of "perpetual mayor" for once saving the population from plague and illness. The programme includes "bous al carrer", the popular (and controversial) bull-running event, the deafening "mascletà" and the traditional competition for decorated flower crosses which spring up around the old town.
On the 2nd of May, it is traditional to visit the streets of the Historical City Centre to look at the colourful "Cruces de Mayo", crosses made out of flowers by the neighbours which win local prizes based on their preparation, originality and beauty.
